Sample College Essay
The day started like any other. I walked around the barn doing all of the chores I was assigned. I was tacking up horses, refilling water buckets, and assisting in lessons. And finally, I was assigned to retrieve some horses out of the pasture for a later lesson. As I walked into the pasture, halter and lead rope in hand, I saw a horse running to the gate. A sharp pain spread like fire across my lower body in my attempt to shut it before he could escape. I soon realized that he had kicked me. Despite the pain, I still went after him and brought him back to his pasture, where he would be safe and cared for. I have been bitten, scratched, shoved, and many other things, and I still come back. Even after all of this, I continue to dedicate my time to these animals because I am more concerned with their health than my comfort. Animals, the care they require, and the experiences I have had providing that care have helped to strengthen my skills in problem-solving and collaboration, as well as my resolve to work toward keeping them happy and healthy.
As mentioned before, I got into all kinds of tricky situations while I worked at the barn. These situations helped me develop problem-solving skills, even more so since I worked with these very strong, very dangerous animals. I have had to weigh the risks and rewards of specific actions on a day-to-day basis. These skills help me in my current life, as I have to constantly take risks and take action to solve problems both in my academic career and my current job. In the future, I plan to utilize these skills to the best of my ability to help both myself and my peers during undergraduate studies at the Pre-Veterinary Program and beyond.
I have also worked with many different kinds of people over my time at the barn. Some were friendlier than others, but I had to work to get along and be productive with each of them, even when we disagreed on things. My coworkers and I might disagree on things, but I will always strive to keep things civil and light-hearted, so we all get along as best we can and work efficiently. These skills help me in my present, especially during my current job, where they are being tested every time I clock in. In the future, these skills will be used in both my schooling, but especially during my future job.
I hope you can see that my experiences have cultivated someone who understands the importance of collaboration, hard work, and problem-solving in the pursuit of animal welfare. The Pre-Veterinary Program at your university will put me on the path to helping animals all across the country, with its focus on education and preparing students for professional school. I look forward to working in the program and achieving my goals using the knowledge I gain from this program.
